Hello, Readers!

A former Peace Corps Volunteer, National Geographic geography educator, and classroom teacher, Cathy Salter, wrote a weekly newspaper column for the Columbia Daily Tribune and Boone County Journal in Missouri from 1994 until moving to California in 2021. She is the author of “Rediscovering the Historic Missouri River” (published April 2002 National Geographic), and has authored two collections of essays—Notes From Breakfast Creek: A Look at the World (2008) and Notes from Boomerang Creek (2015).

An avid reader, Cathy was a founding member of the Unbound Book Festival while living in Missouri and served as Board President for five years. In early 2020, she helped launch, The Common Ingredient — a website founded in Columbia, MO that is now without borders. Visitors to the website submit recipes and food stories to help address food insecurity through donations. To find recipes, submit one of your own, or access its quarterly newsletter, visit www.thecommoningredient.com. Cathy shares life with geographer Kit Salter at their home in Nevada City, CA, and publishes a blog weekly on her website at www.cathysalter.com.
